Fukushima getting worse: Toxic Water From Fukushima Spreads to the Pacific Ocean. A single puddle of water from the leaking storage tank is now emitting 100 millisieverts an hour of radiation. That is, the water is so contaminated that, if you were standing 50 centimeters away from it, after one hour you’d be exposed to five times the dose limit for Japanese workers.

Good news: Why the U.S. Power Grid’s Days Are Numbered
He says that in about the time it has taken cell phones to supplant land lines in most U.S. homes, the grid will become increasingly irrelevant as customers move toward decentralized homegrown green energy. Rooftop solar, in particular, is turning tens of thousands of businesses and households into power producers.

Fukushima getting worse: BBC:Fukushima leak is ‘much worse than we were led to believe.
Dr Ken Buesseler is a senior scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution who has examined the waters around Fukushima.
“It is not over yet by a long shot, Chernobyl was in many ways a one week fire-explosive event, nothing with the potential of this right on the ocean.”
“We’ve been saying since 2011 that the reactor site is still leaking whether that’s the buildings and the ground water or these new tank releases. There’s no way to really contain all of this radioactive water on site.”
“Once it gets into the ground water, like a river flowing to the sea, you can’t really stop a ground water flow. You can pump out water, but how many tanks can you keep putting on site?”
Several scientists also raised concerns about the vulnerability of the huge amount of stored water on site to another earthquake.
The quantities of water [TEPCO is] dealing with are absolutely gigantic. What is worse is that the water leakage is everywhere else—it’s not just [coming] from the tanks. It is leaking out from the basements, it is leaking from the cracks all over the place. Nobody can measure that. It is much worse than we have been led to believe, much worse.”

Michael..what a great way to start a New Year! It is just way beyond terrific to have all of these important articles, with their links, all listed on one page. First of all, it is really impressive to see that there are so many recent articles that MUST be read, and second…it is wonderful not to have to go hunting for them. I just wish I had the time back that I have spent in the past, trying to locate these articles, in order to forward them to friends, in an attempt to inform and educate them as to the nuclear crisis that is going on, thanks to Fukushima. I just wish that the US Government would go and do likewise!
While I know that there are certainly articles on this potential global disaster to be found in some small newspapers, I have not, so far, found anyone, anywhere, who has been tackling the whole Fukushima disaster, head on, as you have been doing. And, in addition, you have also written many articles, plus, now, a five part series, on our local nuclear and toxic chemical contamination on the Santa Susana Field Laboratory.
I cannot believe how incredibly lucky that we all are to have you here in our midst, doing your knowledgeable environmental reporting, without which we would basically all be in the dark, when it comes to understanding and interpreting everything that has been happening in California, the USA, and the World. My hope is that in 2013, you, and also Denise, will continue to have the concern, energy and courage to keep investigating and writing about all of these issues, which affect the health and welfare of all of us.
Meanwhile, 2012 grateful THANKS!
